Harvester

nounStandard termForestry

A heavy forestry machine that fells, delimbs, and bucks trees into logs in one continuous operation.

A complex piece of heavy equipment used in cut-to-length logging systems. The machine features an articulated arm with a specialized processing head that grabs a standing tree, cuts it at the base, strips off the branches, and crosscuts the stem into precise log lengths. This single-grip system drastically reduces manual labor and keeps operators safely inside a reinforced cab.

Heard on the job

The harvester is down for a blown hydraulic hose on the feed rollers, so the forwarder has nothing to pick up.

Do not mix it up with

  • Feller-buncher: A feller-buncher only cuts and gathers trees into piles, whereas a harvester cuts, delimbs, and bucks the trees into finished logs.
