Bucking

nounStandard termForestry

Cross-cutting a downed and stripped tree into sections suitable for transport.

The act of cross-cutting a downed tree trunk into specific lengths requested by the sawmill or processing facility. A bucker must read the tension and compression in the resting log to avoid pinching the chainsaw bar. Decisions made during bucking directly impact the yield and value of the timber, as the operator must cut around defects and maximize the number of high-grade logs.

Heard on the job

Once the skidder pulls the stems to the landing, the guys will start bucking them into 16-foot sawlogs.
