Skidding

nounStandard termForestry

The process of dragging felled trees or logs from the cutting area to a central landing.

Once a tree is felled and limbed, it must be moved to a staging area where it can be loaded onto trucks. Skidding involves pulling the logs along the ground, usually with a specialized tractor called a skidder, a bulldozer, or historically with draft animals. One end of the log is typically lifted off the ground by a grapple or cable winch to reduce friction and soil disturbance.
