Broadleaved trees that reproduce by flowers and typically shed their leaves in autumn.

Any broadleaved, angiosperm tree species, such as oak, maple, or hickory, regardless of the actual physical density of its wood. In timber markets, hardwoods are valued for furniture, flooring, and veneer due to their complex grain patterns and durability. They generally grow slower than conifers and require different silvicultural treatments to regenerate successfully after a harvest.

Balsa wood is technically a hardwood because it comes from a broadleaved tree, even though its wood is extremely soft.

  • Softwood: Hardwood refers to broadleaved angiosperms, while softwood refers to cone-bearing gymnosperms, regardless of actual wood density.
