Hydromesic

adjectiveStandard termForestry

A forest site that is moderately wet but drains better than a fully flooded area.

A soil moisture regime that falls between wet (hydric) and moist (mesic). These sites retain substantial water throughout the growing season but do not stay permanently saturated, allowing a wider variety of tree species to establish deep root systems. Timber on hydromesic sites often grows rapidly due to the constant water supply but remains vulnerable to windthrow if the water table rises.
