Valley rafter

nounStandard termBuilding

A heavy diagonal framing member that forms the internal intersection of two roof slopes.

A primary structural beam running diagonally from the wall plates up to the ridge board, creating the internal V-shaped angle of a complex roof. It carries the upper ends of the jack rafters and bears the concentrated load of the intersecting roof planes.
