An intentional empty space built into a structure between walls, floors, or ceilings.

A planned, enclosed empty space within a building's framework. Voids are often left between a dropped ceiling and the floor above, or within cavity walls, to route plumbing, electrical wiring, and HVAC ducts, or to provide acoustic and thermal separation.
