Barrel vault

nounStandard termBuilding

A continuous arched ceiling or roof structure that resembles a cylinder cut in half lengthwise.

This architectural element provides a semi-circular overhead span that carries structural loads outward and downward along its parallel supporting walls. Unlike complex intersecting vaults, it maintains a uniform cross-section along its entire length. Builders construct these using masonry, curved steel trusses, or specialized framing techniques to create dramatic, open interior corridors or distinctive exterior rooflines.

Heard on the job

The architect wants a barrel vault running the entire length of the main corridor, so we need to order custom curved tracks for the drywallers.
