Brace up

verbStandard termBuilding

To install temporary or permanent supports to stabilize a structure.

Framing crews install diagonal lumber, metal strapping, or specialized shores to keep walls, trusses, or formwork plumb and secure. This prevents the assembly from racking, shifting, or collapsing under wind loads or its own weight before the final sheathing or structural connections are complete. Proper bracing is critical for site safety during the erection phase.

Heard on the job

Brace up that gable end wall before the wind picks up this afternoon.

Insider tip

Temporary bracing should always be nailed off securely into solid framing, never just tacked into the subfloor.
