A structural reinforcement, usually an L-shaped or T-shaped assembly of lumber, fastened across the top of ceiling joists or trusses. It acts as a rigid spine that ties the individual members together, preventing them from twisting, bowing, or vibrating under load. In concrete formwork, it is a heavy vertical timber used to stiffen the horizontal walers.
Heard on the job
Nail a two-by-six strongback across those ceiling joists before you walk on them so they don't roll over.
Insider tip
A strongback is highly effective at stopping ceiling bounce, often doing more for floor rigidity than simply up-sizing the joists.
