Stiffener

nounStandard termBuilding

An additional structural element attached to a beam or plate to prevent buckling.

A secondary piece of steel, often an angle bar or plate, welded or bolted to a primary structural member to increase its rigidity. They are commonly placed vertically along the web of a deep steel beam at points of high shear stress or concentrated loads. By reinforcing the web, they prevent the metal from buckling under heavy weight.
