T-beam

nounStandard termBuilding

A load-bearing structural member with a cross section that looks like a capital letter T.

A T-beam is a structural element featuring a horizontal top flange and a vertical web, forming a T shape. The top flange resists compressive stresses, while the vertical web resists shear stresses and provides depth for bending strength. They are commonly cast in concrete where the floor slab acts as the flange and the joist acts as the web, or manufactured in steel for framing.

Heard on the job

The structural engineer called for concrete T-beams to span the parking garage roof.

Insider tip

In monolithic concrete construction, the slab and the beam are poured together so they act as a single T-beam unit, maximizing structural efficiency.
