This short piece of structural timber is nailed horizontally between studs in a timber-framed wall. It prevents the vertical studs from bowing or twisting under load and provides a solid backing for attaching drywall, cabinets, or heavy fixtures. It is the standard term used in New Zealand, equivalent to blocking or nogging in other regions.
