Dutch corner

nounStandard termBuilding

A masonry corner bond constructed by placing a three-quarter length brick at the return.

This bricklaying technique establishes the corner pattern of a wall by starting the course with a brick cut to three-quarters of its standard length. It prevents vertical joints from aligning in successive courses, ensuring structural integrity in bonds like English or Flemish. Using this cut piece eliminates the need for smaller, weaker quarter-bats near the corner.

Heard on the job

Start that course with a Dutch corner so we keep the bond staggered properly down the line.
