Galletting

nounStandard termBuilding

The practice of pressing small pieces of stone or flint into wet mortar joints.

A traditional masonry technique where small stone chips, flints, or spalls are embedded into the thick mortar joints of a stone wall. This reinforces the mortar, reduces the amount of binder needed, and adds a decorative texture to the finished masonry surface.

Heard on the job

The restoration spec requires galletting on the exterior fieldstone walls to match the historic finish.
