Inbond

adjectiveStandard termBuilding

Describes a masonry unit laid with its longest dimension extending into the thickness of the wall.

A brick or stone positioned perpendicularly to the face of the wall so that it ties the outer surface to the inner core or backing. Laying units inbond provides transverse strength to the masonry assembly, preventing the separate wythes from peeling apart under structural loads.

Heard on the job

Make sure every sixth course is laid inbond to tie the brick veneer back to the blockwork.

Do not mix it up with

  • Outbond: Inbond units (headers) tie into the wall depth, while outbond units (stretchers) run parallel to the wall face.
