verbStandard termBuilding

To fill and finish the mortar joints between bricks or stones in a masonry wall.

The process of inserting fresh mortar into the joints of brickwork or stonework and tooling it to create a finished profile. Masons do this to seal the wall against water intrusion and to give the masonry a clean, uniform appearance. It is often done as a repair technique on older walls where the original mortar has weathered away.
