Masons clear out deteriorated mortar from the joints of older brick or stone walls and pack new mortar into the voids. This restores the structural integrity of the wall and prevents water infiltration. The new mortar must be carefully matched in strength and composition to the original materials to prevent damage to the surrounding masonry units.
