Polymeric sand

nounStandard termBuilding

A granular material mixed with binder additives that hardens when exposed to moisture.

A specialized jointing material used in hardscaping to lock pavers or natural stone slabs together. It consists of fine sand mixed with silica or other synthetic polymers. Once swept into the joints and lightly misted with water, the polymers activate and cure into a firm, flexible bond that resists weed growth, insect tunneling, and washouts.

Heard on the job

Sweep the polymeric sand into the patio joints and make sure you blow off the excess dust before you wet it down.

Insider tip

Never wet polymeric sand while it is still sitting on the surface of the pavers, as it will cure in place and leave a permanent haze.
