Set

nounStandard termBuilding

A temporary extension block used in pile driving to transfer hammer blows to a pile below the machine's reach.

A heavy timber or steel block placed on top of a pile during driving operations. When a pile needs to be driven below the level of the driving rig or ground surface, the hammer cannot reach it directly. The set acts as a follower, transmitting the impact force from the hammer down to the pile head.

Heard on the job
