Wing wall

nounStandard termBuilding

A retaining wall attached to a bridge abutment or culvert to hold back surrounding soil.

A structural retaining wall positioned adjacent to a bridge abutment, box culvert, or tunnel entrance. These walls angle outward to hold back the roadway embankment and prevent soil from spilling into the waterway or right-of-way. They channel water flow smoothly into the culvert opening and stabilize the earth fill supporting the approaching roadbed.
