A horizontal timber or block installed tightly between vertical studs in a framed wall. It prevents the tall vertical members from bowing or twisting under load and provides a solid backing for attaching drywall or fixtures. In older timber framing, nogging also referred to the brickwork used to fill the spaces between timbers.
