Post and lintel

phraseStandard termBuilding

A fundamental structural system consisting of vertical supports carrying horizontal beams.

A load-bearing construction method where horizontal members span the empty space between robust vertical supports. The vertical posts carry the compressive weight of the roof or upper floors down to the foundation, while the horizontal lintel must resist bending under the load. It is the core principle behind most door and window framing.

Heard on the job
