On the level

phraseShop talkBuilding

A state where a structural element is perfectly horizontal and true.

A description of a building element that is perfectly horizontal, matching the reading of a spirit level. Establishing that a foundation or beam is on the level is the prerequisite for all subsequent framing. If the base is not perfectly level, the error will compound as the structure goes up.

Heard on the job

Check that sill plate again and make sure it's dead on the level before we start standing walls.

Insider tip

A piece can be straight without being level. Always check horizontal pieces with a reliable spirit or laser level.
