Intertie

nounStandard termBuilding

A secondary horizontal framing member that connects and stabilizes vertical uprights.

An intertie is a horizontal timber or steel member placed between studs or uprights in framed construction. It acts as a tie to prevent the vertical members from buckling or spreading under load. Unlike top plates or sills, interties are positioned mid-height within the wall or frame structure to add rigidity.
