The vertical side piece of a door, window, or fireplace opening.

A jamb is the vertical framing member that forms the sides of an opening in a wall. In a doorway, the jambs bear the weight of the door via the hinges and receive the latch on the strike side. They must be installed perfectly plumb and secure to ensure the door or window operates correctly without binding.
