A steel or aluminum framing component that looks like the letter C when viewed from the end.

A metal beam formed with a wide flat web and two perpendicular flanges extending from one side. It is widely used in steel framing for lintels, wall studs, and bracing where a flat mounting surface is needed on the back side. Because it is asymmetrical, it is prone to twisting under heavy loads compared to an I-beam.
