Counterlath

nounStandard termBuilding

A lath placed on the opposite side of a studded wall to balance the structure.

A thin strip of wood or metal installed on the unfinished side of a partition wall after the primary face is already lathed and plastered. It helps distribute the stress of the curing plaster and provides a backing grid for the second side's finish.

Heard on the job

Nail up the counterlath before the plasterers get back from lunch so they can start the reverse face.
