Butment

nounShop talkBuilding

The solid mass of masonry or concrete that supports the lateral pressure of an arch or bridge.

A heavy foundational structure built at the ends of a bridge or vault to carry the horizontal thrust of the span. It acts as the anchor point that prevents the arch from spreading outward under a heavy load. While engineers usually call this an abutment, older blueprints and veteran masons still use the clipped term.
