Ashlaring

nounStandard termBuilding

The short vertical timber framing installed in garrets to cut off the sharp angle where the roof meets the floor.

This framing technique uses short upright studs positioned between the floor joists and the sloping rafters of an attic or top-floor space. It creates a vertical knee wall that hides the tight, unusable wedge of space near the eaves. Builders use this method to provide a plumb surface for drywall or plaster in rooms tucked under a pitched roof.

Heard on the job

We need to frame the ashlaring about four feet off the deck so they have enough headroom to put a bed against that wall.
