Airspace

nounStandard termBuilding

A deliberate empty cavity between building layers used for insulation or drainage.

A continuous, empty gap left between two layers of a building assembly, such as between a brick veneer and the structural sheathing. This void provides thermal insulation, allows moisture to drain away, and promotes airflow to dry out the wall system.

Heard on the job

Make sure you keep the mortar droppings out of the airspace so the weep holes can actually drain the wall.
