Valley board

nounStandard termBuilding

A flat timber installed in the internal angle of a roof to support metal flashing.

A flat piece of lumber laid in the trough where two pitched roof sections intersect. It provides a solid, continuous backing for valley flashing, metal irons, or undertile gutters, preventing the metal from sagging under the weight of water or snow.

Heard on the job

Nail the valley board flush with the rafters so the copper flashing lays flat.
