Running gear

nounStandard termAutomotive

The functional mechanical components that connect a vehicle to the road and allow it to move.

The collective assembly of a vehicle's wheels, tires, brakes, suspension components, steering linkages, and axles. This term distinguishes the dynamic, load-bearing underpinnings of the chassis from the static body shell, interior, and the engine itself.

Heard on the job

The body is completely rusted out, but the running gear is solid enough to swap into a donor shell.

Do not mix it up with

  • Drivetrain: Drivetrain refers specifically to power delivery components, while running gear includes suspension and steering.
