Shock

nounShop talkAutomotive

A hydraulic or pneumatic device that dampens suspension movement.

A shock absorber controls the rebound and compression of the vehicle's springs, preventing the car from bouncing uncontrollably over bumps. It works by forcing oil or gas through tiny internal valving, converting the kinetic energy of the suspension movement into heat.
