Spat

nounStandard termAutomotive

A removable piece of bodywork that covers the upper portion of a vehicle's rear wheel arch.

This aerodynamic or styling panel encloses the rear wheel well, hiding the top half of the tire from view. Automakers traditionally used them to reduce aerodynamic drag and create a sleek, uninterrupted body line along the rear quarter panel. Because they trap moisture and road debris, the mounting flanges behind them are notorious spots for hidden rust.

Be careful pulling the spat off that classic Jaguar, because the mounting clips are brittle and snap easily.
