Sway

nounStandard termAutomotive

The lateral leaning or rolling motion of a vehicle's body during cornering.

The side-to-side tilting motion of a vehicle's sprung mass (the body and chassis) relative to its unsprung mass (the wheels and axles) when subjected to lateral acceleration. Excessive sway compromises handling by unweighting the inside tires and altering suspension geometry, reducing overall grip.

Heard on the job

Adding a thicker anti-roll bar in the rear really cut down on the sway through tight corners.
