Coilover

nounStandard termAutomotive

A suspension unit that combines a shock absorber and a coil spring into a single assembly.

A coilover integrates the damping strut and the suspension spring into one bolt-on unit. This design saves space and provides a direct load path from the chassis to the control arm. High-performance versions feature threaded bodies that allow mechanics to adjust the spring preload and vehicle ride height independently.

Heard on the job

We need to dial in a bit more negative camber after installing those new coilovers.

Insider tip

Upgrading to adjustable coilovers is the standard first step for track-day builds, but cheap kits often ruin the street ride quality.
