Drivetrain

nounStandard termAutomotive

The complete group of components that generate power and deliver it to the road surface.

The drivetrain encompasses every mechanical part responsible for pushing the vehicle forward, excluding the engine. It includes the transmission, driveshaft, axles, and differential. When people say powertrain, they mean the drivetrain plus the engine, but drivetrain focuses strictly on the gearing and shafts that manage the power delivery.

Heard on the job

We offer a 100,000-mile warranty on the engine and drivetrain.

Do not mix it up with

  • Driveline: The driveline excludes the transmission, while the drivetrain includes it.
