Half shaft

nounStandard termAutomotive

An axle shaft that transmits rotational power from a central differential to a single drive wheel.

A half shaft connects the transaxle or differential to the wheel hub, transferring engine torque to the road. It uses constant velocity joints at one or both ends to accommodate the up-and-down motion of the suspension and the turning of the steering wheel. Front-wheel-drive and independent rear suspension vehicles rely on these shafts to maintain smooth power delivery during articulation.
