Gear

nounStandard termAutomotive

A specific ratio of rotational speed to torque selected within a transmission.

A single mechanical ratio engaged within a transmission to multiply engine torque or rotational speed before sending it to the drive wheels. Lower ratios provide high torque for acceleration, while higher ratios allow the vehicle to cruise efficiently at higher speeds with lower engine RPM.
