Driveline

nounStandard termAutomotive

The components that transfer power from the transmission to the wheels.

The driveline consists of the mechanical components that carry torque from the output shaft of the transmission to the drive wheels. This typically includes the driveshaft, universal joints, differential, and axle shafts. It specifically excludes the engine and the transmission itself, distinguishing it from the broader drivetrain.

Heard on the job

Check the driveline for play, I heard a clunk when putting it in gear.

Insider tip

A vibration that changes with vehicle speed rather than engine RPM usually points to a driveline imbalance.

Do not mix it up with

  • Drivetrain: The drivetrain includes the transmission, whereas the driveline only covers the components after the transmission.
