Body control module

nounStandard termAutomotive

A central computer that manages a vehicle's electronic chassis and interior accessories.

The body control module is an electronic control unit that coordinates non-engine electrical systems in a vehicle. It acts as a central hub for functions like power windows, central locking, interior lighting, windshield wipers, and the immobilizer. It communicates with other modules over the CAN bus network, reducing the need for heavy, complex physical wiring between individual switches and relays.

Heard on the job

The wipers won't shut off and the dome light is flashing, so I'm pulling the codes on the body control module.

Insider tip

When diagnosing strange, unrelated electrical gremlins occurring simultaneously, water intrusion into the BCM is a prime suspect.
