The laborer at the front of the paver who backs each haul truck into position, tells the driver when to raise the bed and open the gate, and keeps the hopper from running low or spilling mix onto the road ahead. He also collects load tickets and cleans up spilled mix before the paver tracks run it into the mat. A sharp dump man is a big part of keeping the paver moving at a constant speed.
Dump man says next truck's another twenty out, slow her down or the hopper's going to run empty.
The dump man's hand signal, not the driver's mirror, decides when a truck stops, raises its bed and pulls away.
