Cold load

nounShop talkAsphalt

A truckload of mix that arrives below the minimum temperature or with cold, crusted chunks.

A load that cooled too much in transit or at the plant and reaches the paver under the spec minimum for that mix, or with a hard crust and lumps that will not break down in the screed. Inspectors shoot it with an infrared gun and reject it, because cold mix will not reach density and leaves rough, open spots in the mat. Long hauls, poor tarping and trucks waiting in line on a windy day are the usual causes.
