An asphalt plant that dries aggregate, screens it into hot bins, then weighs each size and the binder into a pugmill mixer for every batch, often 2 to 5 tons at a time. Batch plants turn out less tonnage per hour than drum plants but can switch mixes from one batch to the next, which suits city work, small jobs and plants supplying many customers. The screen deck and hot bins also give a second chance to control gradation.
Send the patch trucks to the batch plant, they can mix three tons of 9.5 without shutting down the big drum.
