Cog

nounStandard termWoodworking

A solid projection left on the end of a timber that fits into a matching notch on another timber.

In timber framing, a cog is a specific type of tenon or projection cut onto a beam. It drops into a corresponding notch or trench in an intersecting beam. This mechanical interlock resists shear forces and prevents the timbers from sliding out of alignment.

Heard on the job

Cut the cog a hair long so we can trim it for a tight fit in the tie beam.
