Harr

nounStandard termWoodworking

The heavy vertical stile of a gate that carries the hinges and supports the swinging weight.

The primary structural upright in a traditional gate frame, positioned on the hinge side. Because it must bear the entire cantilevered load of the gate without sagging, the harr is typically cut from thicker, stronger stock than the rest of the frame. The horizontal rails are mortised directly into it, transferring the weight back to the hinges and the adjacent post.

Heard on the job

Make sure the tenons going into the harr are pinned tight, or the whole gate will sag within a year.
