A horizontal timber that supports a stair landing and the top ends of the stringers.

A structural framing member installed horizontally in a stairwell to support the floor of a landing. It acts as the anchoring point where the sloping stringers of the lower flight attach and terminate. It transfers the load of the stairs and the landing into the surrounding walls or vertical posts.
