Ridge beam

nounStandard termWoodworking

A heavy structural timber at the peak of a roof that supports the upper ends of the rafters.

Unlike a non-structural ridge board which only provides a nailing surface, a ridge beam carries the vertical load of the roof framing. It runs horizontally along the apex of the roof and transfers the weight of the rafters and roof deck down to the posts or gable end walls. This construction eliminates outward thrust on the exterior walls, making it essential for vaulted ceilings without collar ties.

Heard on the job

The crane is coming at noon to set the ridge beam, so make sure the gable posts are plumb and braced.
