A stringpiece is a long, continuous beam used along the outer edge of a dock, bridge, or heavy timber frame to bind the cross-members and distribute heavy loads. In stair building, it is an older term for the main inclined support carrying the treads. It acts as a structural margin, capping the ends of joists or planks to prevent them from shifting.
